Since the beginning of last year, God has been doing a mighty and powerful work in me that is leading me into the most profound healing and freedom of my entire life. I have been crying out to him for this breakthrough for a long time, years even. I don’t know what it was that sparked the beginning of this revelatory inner transformation, but I certainly know it wasn’t anything I did on my behalf. Although I faithfully and continually asked him to set me free from the pain I was walking through, from the the darkness of the valley I seemed to have set up camp in, and from the despair and disappointment that seemed to be gradually enveloping every area of my life, and although I held on to hope believing that one day I would be completely liberated from this firm grip that seemed to have an impenetrable stronghold over my life…I can tell you right now that it was absolutely all of His instigation, His timing, His hand, His grace and His love that seemed to catapult me almost overnight into this dynamic journey of discovery, revelation, insight, healing and transformation. Only He can do that. Sure, I can partner with him and co-labour through the gritty process, but ultimately, it was all Him and His perfect timing in my life that has finally set me free and into his promise of life in abundance. The best part of this all? It is available to everyone!!! To all of us. If He can do this in my life He can, and will, do it in yours. But be warned, it hasn’t been pretty. It hasn’t been fun. It has been hard work and painful at times, but ultimately it has been so amazingly worth it.

Through this process to freedom I have noticed a pattern that God has led me through every time He presses his finger gently and lovingly on an area of my heart, life or soul that I need to face. Coming from a background in counselling and psychology, I can completely understand this to be a simple yet powerful process that we as humans pretty much all cycle through as we encounter healing, in whatever form that may be.

First He reveals.

Then He deals.

An only then, does He heal.

Oftentimes we know we have an issue or a wound in certain areas of our hearts and lives. It might be glaringly obvious, or it might be a subtle recognition that we continue to push back down below the surface of awareness. Sometimes we cry out to Him and beg Him to heal this pain and hurt within us and sometimes it naturally heals through the organic processes of life and His tangible work in our daily lives. I wish it was all like this, but generally our hearts and souls are more like an iceberg – there’s way more going on below the surface that our conscious minds can’t comprehend and our spiritual eyes cant yet see or discern.

We could spend hundreds of dollars working through these continual depths with a professional (which I have done before many times, and which I completely recommend!), but there’s another path that is available to us at our very fingertips. Revelation. Revelation from God. The unveiling of something to us by His supernatural power at work within us. The removal of the blindfold to see what was there all along, that we somehow couldn’t see before. And here’s the hard part…the reality of the truth in our life and hearts that He is wanting – no, needing – us to face.

Revelation: The unveiling of something to us by His supernatural power at work within us

To do this we first have to be open. We have to be prepared to face the truth within us, that may be very very ugly, may be incredibly hard to hear, and may be very painful to accept. It may require us taking ownership of mistakes and short-fallings, it may require us to see the truth in our lives in a way that shocks us to the core. As painful as it is, it is better than continuing through life blind…thinking we’ve got it all together, when really, we’ve got it all so very wrong. So I say we have to be open, because when are sincerely asking God to reveal the truth in our lives, we have to be genuinely prepared to hear the truth. Not necessarily what we’re expecting, or wanting to hear, but the cold, hard facts.  Are we going to be offended by what we hear, see and receive, or are we going to embrace it no matter how unpleasant it is? Are we going to become defensive and refuse to accept about ourselves what we honestly would rather not know? Or are we going to embrace it and take accountability for it? As we come before God and ask Him for this revelation, we need to come with open hearts, open minds and an open spirit so that no matter how big, bad and ugly the revelation is, we must know that it’s for our own good and will lead us to ultimate healing and freedom. Our heart needs to be in a position to receive the truth.

Our heart needs to be in a position to receive the truth

I recently studied through the book of Revelation again in my devotional times with God. Although I have done this numerous times before, this time I read The Passion Translation, and boy oh boy was it like reading it for the very first time! I can’t recommend The Passion Translation enough! Not just the book of Revelation, but all the books that Dr Brian Simmons has already translated. I simply cannot wait for the remainder of the Bible to be translated and published through him, as it is so full of life-giving, Spirit-filled, poetic, truth, in both the chapters and verses, but also the introductions, studies and footnotes. A verse that continued to stick out to me as I was reading through Revelation was the repetition of ‘The one whose heart is open, let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying now…’ (first in Rev 2:7). The book of Revelation is exactly that…the REVEALING of Jesus Christ to those who are willing, expecting and hungry to discover. It is the unveiling of Jesus Christ, through John’s ‘revelation’ of his vision and heavenly encounter, but also for us, today, if our hearts are open and willing to listen carefully to hear what the Spirit is saying, now.

John also goes on through his encounter: “Purchase eye salve to be placed over your eyes so that you can truly see. All those I dearly love I unmask and train.” (Rev 3:18b-19). Notice the onus is on us, first and foremost? God WILL unmask and train us, because He loves us and He is a good God, but it is up to us to position ourself to be able to see clearly, without a mask on, without a blindfold, without a veil over our eyes, hindering our sight. We have to PURCHASE the eye salve in order to be able to see – and that costs us. Are we willing to see the truth in our lives and hearts? Are we prepared to pay whatever the price will be to have His beautiful truth exposed within us? He will lead us to healing and wholeness, but we must begin with a pure and humble heart, one that is truly willing to hear what He has to say and expose within us.

I’m going to take this a little deeper, and I hope that you can stay with me on this one as I’m trying to summarise a HUGE revelation I had into a few sentences! Rev 9:1-2a says “Then the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that fell from heaven to earth, and He was handed the key to the shaft leading down to the pit of the deep. He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit and a blanket of smoke began to rise out of it…” While it is commonly accepted that the interpretation of this is that Jesus is that star, and He has the keys to the great abyss – death and Hades -, the book of Revelation is so multifaceted that it can be interpreted on many levels (in fact, the entire Bible can, because it is God’s LIVING Word!). It’s not just an ‘end times’ book…but it’s a RIGHT NOW times as well, for us, personally, individually, in our own spiritual lives. As we read His Word the Spirit continually reveals new depths and new truths to us, and we can receive personal revelation through the book of Revelation!

I love what Dr Simmons says in the footnotes of these verses that make it so applicable to our own lives today – “Jesus holds the keys to the pit of the deep…Many things are unlocked and opened in Revelation with the purpose of releasing a new understanding or revelation. There is a deep place in the human heart, like a pit, that Jesus opens so that we can see what has been there inside us. The smoke of our abyss is a picture of deception. The lies of the enemy are a ‘smokescreen’.”

There is a deep place in the human heart, like a pit, that Jesus opens so that we can see what has been there inside us.

Dr Brian Simmons, the book of Revelation, footnotes

Are you with me? Can you see what I’m getting at here? THIS is the depths of our hearts and souls that only Jesus can unlock and penetrate. The ugliness that may arise from deep within us is not something we are to feel shame or guilt about, it’s simply the lies of the enemy that we have partnered with and allowed to find a resting place deep within our souls. Often these are years or even decades of self-beliefs, mindsets, words and curses spoken over us from when we were small innocent children, that have taken root and implanted themselves into our belief system and taken hold of our identity. But as Jesus unlocks these depths within us the smoke and lies are finally released through His power, and it is only once the smoke has lifted that we can truly see what is in there…that we can then uncover and properly deal with.

In order to do this we have to ask God to expose the depths of our hearts, through His light. We have to ask him to shine his revelation-light on the deepest darkest places within us, the depths that we don’t even consciously go down to or recognise or even know exist. We have to ask Him to reveal the things lurking within the darkness by exposing them with His light.

Ephesians 5:8 puts it perfectly, “Once your life was full of sin’s darkness, but now you have the light of the Lord shining through you, because of your union with him. Your mission is to live as children flooded with this revelation-light!”

It’s kind of simple really…imagine being in a dark room and having no idea what surrounds you, but all it takes is simply flicking on the switch and in an instant the brightness of the light reveals everything in the room. I say kind of, because in theory it is, but in reality it may not be quite as instantaneous or complete as the light switch scenario! But I do guarantee that it is more powerful, more profound and more complete than trying to dig down to these places from a human perspective and attempting to deal with our inner-being wounds and issues from our limited understanding.

That’s why it’s called revelation. It has to be REVEALED to us. And it has to be revealed by the Spirit. Only He can do this work in us, only He can expose these truths, these lies, these depths, these wounds that need opening up. We can have the best intentions in the world, but if we are unknowingly blinded or our eyes are veiled, we will never be able to see the truth through our own humanness. Only God can reveal it to us, and we have to come before him with a genuine, open heart, ready to discover whatever our abyss may expose.

Only He can do this work in us, only He can expose these truths, these lies, these depths, these wounds that need opening up. We can have the best intentions in the world, but if we are unknowingly blinded or our eyes are veiled, we will never be able to see the truth through our own humanness

The next part of God’s ongoing process He has been doing in me and through me over the past year is learning to DEAL with what He REVEALS in me.

Its one thing to have revelation. It’s another to have the wisdom and strategy to know what to do with it, how to handle it, and how to work through it in order to complete the process of growth that God is doing in our lives to lead us to freedom, healing and wholeness.

We cant stay in brokenness forever. We cant live with the same old issues and never be set free. We have to face them and deal with them, head on. Yes, it will be painful, because the truth hurts! But we need to dig deep down to discover the ROOT CAUSE of these issues..and this is a process, sometimes long, often painful, but definitely invaluable. By His goodness and grace and through His love He does this so tenderly, so gently, so slowly at the perfect pace He knows we need Him to go. Yes, the truths may be hard to hear, but like a skilled surgeon he carefully and perfectly slices them out from our hearts, removing all scars, all wounds and all evidence that it ever existed.

It’s one thing to have revelation. It’s another to have the wisdom and strategy to know what to do with it, how to handle it, and how to work through it in order to complete the process of growth that God is doing in our lives to lead us to freedom, healing and wholeness

Ephesians 5:13 (TPT) goes on to say “Whatever the revelation-light exposes, it will also correct, and everything that reveals truth is light to the soul.” This partners so beautifully with the verse in Revelation we looked at earlier, “All those I dearly love, I unmask and train.” (Rev 3:19 TPT). Can you see the pattern here? Whatever God reveals, exposes and brings into the light…He doesn’t expect us to deal with, but instead HE does the work that needs to be done. He reveals, SO THAT He can deal with these issues in our life. His intention is never to reveal something so powerful and just leaving us standing there all alone wondering what to do with the bomb in our hands. Never! He is so full of love, so full of grace, so full of goodness, that He already has a plan for whatever it is that He brings up from within us. He already has a path for us to walk, a way for us to be corrected, a way for us to repent, a way for us to move forward, a way for us to forgive, a way for us to let go of bitterness, a way for us to heal. He is such a gentleman, such a tender loving Father, such a kind and compassionate Counsellor. He already has the answers before we ask the questions, “How do I deal with this? What do I do with this revelation?” He has already gone ahead and made the path straight and the road flat for us to walk on. Yes, we have to do the walking, we have to put one foot in front of the other and get to the other side, but he has paved the way for us. He has prepared the path to freedom.

Whatever God reveals, exposes and brings into the light…HE deals with and does the work that needs to be done

{ H E A L }

And he doesn’t just leave us there, abandoned at the end of the journey of dealing with the revelation and the root causes of the issues in our lives. God HEALS! As He reveals, He gives us the methods to deal, and as we partner with Him and walk through this, He leads us to true healing. God is our healer, our Jehover-Rapha, our divine, supernatural, all powerful healer – not just of our bodies, our sicknesses and diseases, but of our souls, spirits, minds and hearts, our inner being. He heals the wounds, He heals the scars, He heals the damage done to us, He heals our past and makes us whole again. He heals the shame, he heals the guilt. He restores, recompenses and releases us into freedom. True freedom in Him.

The verse John 8:32 “For if you embrace the truth, it will release true freedom in your lives” is so much more than just an entry into salvation. It is the beginning of perpetual freedom. As the depths of our hearts continue to be exposed, deeper and deeper each time, we experience a higher level of freedom correspondingly.

As He reveals, He gives us the methods to deal, and as we partner with Him and walk through this, He leads us to true healing

This kind of supernatural healing can happen so swiftly if we persistently persevere to humbly partner with Him and the work He is trying to do in our lives. Today as I was was journalling I saw the image of a garden – my soul – and I saw Jesus in my garden doing the work only He could do. We all want a garden that is healthy, flourishing and producing great fruit, but in order to get there we first have to do what every natural garden needs. First we have to get rid of the weeds. God cant plant anything in our lives that will have lasting fruit if our garden is full of weeds. The healthy plants will battle with the noxious plants and often times will be strangled by them, all life taken away. Jesus needs to do His work in our garden and remove the weeds. This is the revealing and dealing part of the process. He needs to remove every weed BY ITS ROOT. We need to completely take control of and master the root issues that are revealed to us. If we just deal with them on the surface level it’s like pulling out the top part of the weed and leaving the roots in the ground to continue reproducing. We need to allow Jesus to uproot the toxic weeds from the garden of our heart and soul.

At the same time, we need to get rid of the little foxes that eat away at our vines. Song of Songs talks about these in chapter 2, “You must catch the troubling foxes, those sly little foxes that hinder our relationship. For they raid our budding vineyard of love to ruin what I’ve planted within you. Will you catch them and remove them for me? We will do it together.” (2:15, TPT) This is Jesus, speaking to us, His Lover. Dr Simmons explains in his footnotes, “These ‘foxes’ are the compromises that are hidden deep in our hearts. These are areas of our lives where we have not yet allowed the victory of Christ to shine into. The foxes keep the fruit of His Spirit from growing within us.”

We need to allow Jesus to uproot the toxic weeds from the garden of our heart and soul. Then we need to get rid of the little foxes that eat away at the fruit of our vines

I love how the Word of God reaffirms itself so powerfully over spans of hundreds of years. God spoke the same thing to John in the book of Revelation that He did to Paul in the book of Ephesians, that He did to King Solomon centuries earlier in Song of Songs. We need God to shine His light on the depths of our hearts, to expose the little foxes that are stealing the growth the Spirit is trying to produce in us before it comes to fruitfulness. In all these three books in Scripture we have the promise from our beautiful Jesus that if we partner with Him – pay the price to PURCHASE the eye salve (Rev 2:18) in order to truly see, partner in UNION with Him and make it our mission to CO-LABOUR with His work in us (Eph 5:8), and catch the little foxes in our heart’s garden and remove them WITH the help of Jesus (SoS 2:15) – He WILL fulfil his promises and Word to us and do what only He can do. As much as we would love God to just come swooping into our lives and miraculously solve everything in an instant, He’s not going to. He expects us to partner with him, to join forces with him, to get on board with his mission and work in our lives. He wants us to want it. He wants us to pursue it. His Word promises that He will do it, but He requires us to position ourselves in a place of hunger for Him, in pursuit of Him, desire for Him and Him alone. He doesn’t just want us healed and whole, He wants us. Our love, our affection, our entire heart, mind and soul.

He doesn’t just want us healed and whole, He wants us. Our love, our affection, our entire heart, mind and soul

He wants us set free so that He can release us into our God-given identity, to thrust us into our divine potential, to know who we fully are in Christ, to know what it means to be the sons and daughters of the King, to know our authority, to know what heavenly resources are at our fingertips, He wants us healed, whole, delivered and set free, to release us completely into our unique and individual purposes here on earth, for His Kingdom, for his glory.

Our healing is just the beginning. Our freedom is just the start. I have been walking this painfully beautiful journey for over a year now, and although I can say that through the grace and power of God He has transformed me from the inside out more than I ever could have imagined, the best part is…this is just the beginning!!! He has only JUST started his work in me and the garden is being de-weeded, the foxes fleeing, the soil prepared and fertile and NOW he can start planting is beautiful vines in the garden of my heart and soul and my life can fully embark on producing His luscious, lasting fruit. It is just the beginning!
